Jurisdiction
Each district court strives to ensure jurors represent a cross section of the community, without regard to race, gender, national origin, age, or political affiliation. Potential jurors are randomly selected from people with drivers licenses and the list of registered voters. The people randomly selected complete a questionnaire to further determine if they are qualified to serve on a jury. Those qualified are indiscriminately chosen to be summoned to appear for jury duty.
The United States District Court for the Western District of North Carolina is divided into three divisions which have been designated as points of holding court. The divisions are composed of the following counties:
Asheville: Avery, Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Madison, Mitchell, Transylvania, Yancey, Burke, Cleveland, McDowell, Polk, Rutherfordton, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Macon, and Swain.
Charlotte: Anson, Gaston, Union, and Mecklenburg
Statesville: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell, Catawba, Iredell, Lincoln, Watauga, and Wilkes.
